HISTORY OF LEE SETTLEMENT

The 6800± SF main plantation house was built in the 20’s. The place was advertised as Pine Forest Lake, as seen on the copy of the penny postcard (located in pictures) which was mailed out to advertise the band attending and other social events. There was a white covered sand beach all around the pond.

Pine Forest Lake, also known affectionately as Lee’s Pond was the place to go for social events on the weekends. The mayor, sheriff, and judges attended and participated in these events. The scuppernong winery was active, even though it was during prohibition time. There was a large outside Pavilion which provided shelter and picnic tables and benches for the Potluck meals held after church.

The original home, once the site of the largest ballroom in the state, 3400± SF on the second floor, hosted all of the well-known dance bands of the era including Arkansas-born trombonist Blue Steele, the band leader billed as the “King of Rhythm” and his Victor Recording Orchestra. This band played a bouncy combination of hot jazz and western swing from 1927 to 1930.

Family reunions, church socials, barbecues, and a scuppernong winery made this a very popular place. There were boat races, fishing, and swimming in the lake. There were 2 parlors set aside in the main house for playing card games. After sun down the attendees would go up on the second floor for refreshments, dancing, and music, and there are stories of the Tuskegee Airmen attending events at this property.

Cotton, corn, sugarcane, grapes and pecans, and livestock were the mainstay in the old days and thrived due to the high-quality artesian wells on the plantation.

Family history has it that Sherman camped here on his march to the sea, from Atlanta to Charleston.

This estate grew its scuppernong grapes for making a delicious dinner wine, a 19th century tradition in the South.
